Ten common mistakes on an exchange, and the habit that prevents each
Most expensive exchange mistakes are not bad judgement about sport; they are misreadings of the screen. This lesson lists the ten that come up most, from backing when you meant to lay to forgetting an unmatched bet, with the habit that stops each one.

Ask experienced exchange users about their worst losses and most will describe a mistake with the screen rather than a mistake about a match. The blue and pink cells are next to each other; the stake box and the liability box look alike; a bet left unmatched is easy to forget. Here are the ten mistakes that come up most, and a habit for each.
1. Backing when you meant to lay, or the reverse
The two cells are adjacent and the confirmation screen is easy to click through. Habit: read the confirmation aloud. "Lay, India, ₹1,000, at 1.86, liability ₹860." If any word is wrong, cancel.
2. Confusing stake with liability
On a lay the box you type into is the backer's stake; your risk is shown separately and can be many times larger. Habit: never confirm a lay without reading the liability figure.
3. Leaving an unmatched bet before the start
A hopeful back at a high price, forgotten, gets matched in play at the worst moment. Habit: check the bet slip before the start and cancel what you do not want; set the in-play option to cancel unmatched bets if the exchange offers it.
4. Betting on a delayed picture
The market is ahead of the stream. Habit: do not place in-play bets in reaction to what you have just seen; decide your prices in advance.
5. Laying long prices as "free money"
A lay at 30.0 risks 29 times the stake. Outsiders win. Habit: treat every lay as a bet of its liability, not its stake.
6. Taking the only price in a thin market
A single offer in an empty market is an opinion, not a price. Habit: check matched amount and spread before any bet (lesson 10).
7. Chasing after a suspension
A refused bet feels like a missed chance and the next bet is bigger. Habit: a refusal is the market protecting itself; the price you wanted does not exist any more. Walk away from the screen for a minute.
8. Adding to a losing position
The new price already contains the bad news. Doubling does not recover anything; it doubles the exposure. Habit: decide before the event what you will do if the price moves against you, and do that.
9. Misreading the settlement rules
Tennis retirements, football extra time, rain in cricket, non-runners in racing. Habit: read the market rules once, before the first bet in that sport, and again when something unusual happens.
10. Having no limit
Exchanges are fast and there is always another market. Habit: set a money limit and a time limit before you open the site. Use the exchange's own deposit limits and time-outs if it offers them. If you reach the limit, stop; the market will still be there tomorrow.
