Football on the exchange: three-way match odds, goals and correct score

The draw is a selection of its own, goals move the whole market at once, and the quiet minutes between them are where prices drift

  • Main market Match Odds (home / draw / away)
  • Very high in top leagues and cups
  • Slow drift, then a jump at every goal

Overview

Football is the sport with the most markets on any exchange. Match Odds has three selections (home, draw, away), and a single goal re-prices all three at once. Over/Under goals, Correct Score and the half-time markets sit alongside it. Big league matches are deeply liquid; the long stretches without a goal, when prices drift slowly, are where exchange traders spend most of their time.

In football the main exchange market, Match Odds, has three selections because the draw is a result in its own right. Backing the home team at 2.10 and laying the away team at 3.50 are different bets with different risks, and the draw is often the selection that beginners forget about. The prices of the three selections together imply chances that add up to a little more than 100%; that gap is the overround.

Goals are rare and decisive, so a football market behaves very differently from a cricket market. For long periods nothing happens and the prices drift: the favourite shortens slowly if it is winning, and the draw shortens as the clock runs down in a level game. Then a goal lands and all three prices jump at once, with the market suspended for a few seconds while they reset. A late goal can turn a 1.10 favourite into a 3.00 outsider in one move.

The goals markets, Over/Under 2.5 and the other lines, are priced on the expected total of goals and move in the same jumps. Correct Score has many selections and little money on most of them, so spreads are wide. Tournament outright markets (who wins the league or the cup) tie money up for months. On winzap.vip the home page names the Premier League, La Liga and the FIFA World Cup among the competitions covered, at the time of writing.

Reading a Football market in practice

Before kick-off

  1. 1Open Match Odds and read all three selections. Work out what the prices imply: at 2.10 / 3.40 / 3.75 the chances are about 48%, 29% and 27%, which add up to about 104%.
  2. 2Decide what you actually believe. Laying the draw is a bet that someone scores and the lead holds; backing the draw is a bet on a level game. They are not the same as backing a team.
  3. 3Check the settlement rules: 90 minutes plus stoppage time is normal, but cup ties with extra time and penalties may have separate markets.

During the match

  1. 1Watch the clock as much as the score. In a 0-0 the draw price falls steadily while the two team prices rise; nothing has happened and yet every price has changed.
  2. 2When a goal is scored the market suspends, then reopens with all three prices reset. Any unmatched bet you left in the queue is still there at your old price and may now be matched instantly, which is sometimes what you wanted and sometimes a mistake.
  3. 3A red card or a penalty award also suspends the market. The price after the event is the only price that exists; the one before it has gone.

Which of these markets exist, and when they are turned in play, is decided by each exchange. The examples are made up to show the shape of a price, not real quotes.

Tips for reading it sensibly

Count the draw. In a three-way market the money you lose on a lay can come from a result you never thought about.

Know the settlement before a cup match. If the market is 90 minutes only, a team that wins on penalties did not win the Match Odds market.

The clock moves prices without anything happening. If you leave a back bet on the draw unmatched at a high price in a 0-0, it may be matched later for the wrong reason.

Correct Score spreads are wide. A price you see may be the only offer on that score; laying it means risking a lot for a little.

Do not add to a losing position after a goal to 'get it back'. The new price already contains the goal.

Outright markets lock up your money for months and nobody can predict a season. Treat them as entertainment, not an investment.

Common myths

Myth The draw is the safe lay because draws are rare.

Truth About a quarter of matches in most leagues end level, and in a 0-0 the draw price falls all the way to the final whistle. Laying it at 3.40 means risking 2.4 times the stake on a result that happens often.

Myth The favourite at 1.20 in the 80th minute is free money.

Truth 1.20 means the market gives the other results about one chance in six. Late goals happen, and when they do that 1.20 becomes 3.00 or more in one jump.

Myth Laying the correct score 0-0 is easy profit because a goal is almost certain.

Truth Goalless draws happen in about 7 to 9 per cent of matches in many leagues, and the lay price reflects that. One in twelve times you lose the whole liability.

Words you will see

Three-way market
A market with three possible results: home win, draw, away win.
Overround
The amount by which the implied chances of all selections exceed 100%. On a busy exchange market it is small.
Goals line
The number, such as 2.5, that an Over/Under market is set at. 2.5 means over is three goals or more.
Drift
A price getting longer (higher) over time, often as the clock runs down with nothing happening to that selection.
Asian handicap
A market where one team is given a goal start so that the draw is removed or stakes are split.
Dead heat
When two selections tie for a result. Stakes are divided according to the market rules.

Football FAQ

Why did all three prices move when only one team scored?

Because a goal changes the chance of every result at once. If the home team scores, the home win becomes more likely, and both the draw and the away win become less likely. The exchange suspends the market for a moment and reopens with all three prices reset.

If I back a team and the match goes to penalties, do I win?

Usually not. Match Odds settles on the result after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, so a drawn match that is decided on penalties settles as a draw. Cup ties often have a separate market for who goes through. Read the rules of the exchange you use.

What is the overround on an exchange football market?

It is the amount by which the implied chances of home, draw and away add up to more than 100%. On a busy exchange market it is small, often a per cent or two, because people are competing with each other to offer prices. On thin markets it is much bigger.

Is real-money football betting legal in India?

Betting for money is gambling, which is restricted across India, and the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games. This site is information only and is not legal advice: check the law where you live.
