Greyhound racing on the exchange: six traps, thirty seconds, and a market that fills late

Races every few minutes, a six-runner win market, prices that form in the last minute and a race that is over in half of one

  • Main market Win (trap 1 to 6)
  • Modest, and almost all of it in the last minute before the off
  • Race over in about 30 seconds; little or no in-running

Overview

Greyhound racing is the quickest cycle on any exchange: a market opens, fills with money in the final minute or two, suspends at the traps and settles about thirty seconds later. There are usually six runners, numbered by trap, so the Win market is small and easy to read, but the money arrives late and the race is far too short for most in-running betting.

A greyhound race market lists the runners by trap number, one to six on most tracks, each with a back price and a lay price. Because the field is small, the implied chances are easy to add up and a single favourite often sits near 2.0. There is a Place market on most meetings, paying the first two, and sometimes a forecast market on the first two home in order.

What makes greyhounds different is timing. Meetings run races every ten or fifteen minutes through an afternoon or evening, and most of the money in each race arrives in the last sixty seconds before the traps open. A price seen five minutes before the off may be one unmatched offer; the real market exists only briefly. Once the traps open, the race lasts around thirty seconds, so in-running betting is either not offered at all or lasts a few seconds.

Trap draw, early pace and the track's bends are the things the market prices. Because so many races run every day, the sport attracts people who bet by habit and routine rather than by study; that is exactly where limits and a clear stake plan matter most. winzap.vip lists Greyhound on its exchange menu at the time of writing.

Reading a Greyhounds market in practice

Before the race

  1. 1Open the Win market well before the off and notice how little is matched. Do not treat an early price as the market; it is one person's offer.
  2. 2Read the place terms (usually the first two in a six-dog race) and the forecast rules if you use them.
  3. 3Decide your stake before the minute of activity. The market moves quickly in the last sixty seconds and it is easy to bet in a hurry.

At the traps and after

  1. 1The market suspends as the traps open. If in-running is offered it lasts seconds; most people should ignore it entirely.
  2. 2The race is over in about thirty seconds. The market settles on the official result, including any stewards' decision.
  3. 3The next race's market is already filling. The speed of the cycle is the biggest risk in greyhound betting: it is easy to bet every race without meaning to.

The markets

Which of these markets exist, and whether a race is offered in-running, is decided by each exchange. The examples are made up to show the shape of a price, not real quotes.

Tips for reading it sensibly

Set a number of races, not just a sum of money. With a race every ten minutes, 'one more' turns into an evening.

Ignore the early prices. The market forms in the last minute.

Know the liability of a lay at 9.0 before you lay trap 6: eight times the stake.

Leave in-running alone. A thirty-second race gives no time to think, and the pictures are behind.

Forecasts and reverse forecasts are thin markets with wide spreads. Small stakes, if at all.

Nobody can predict a dog race. Treat any bet as paid entertainment, and only with money you can afford to lose.

Common myths

Myth The inside trap always has an edge.

Truth Trap bias exists at some tracks over some distances, and the market already prices it. Backing trap 1 at 2.4 because it is trap 1 is paying the price everyone else has already agreed.

Myth With a race every ten minutes you can win back a loss quickly.

Truth You can also lose again quickly. The speed of the cycle is a risk to your limits, not an opportunity.

Myth A short race is easier to predict.

Truth A thirty-second race has bumps at the first bend, slow traps and fast finishes. The market is small, not simple.

Words you will see

Trap
The numbered starting box a greyhound runs from. Runners are usually named by trap number.
Forecast
A market on the first two home in the correct order.
Reverse forecast
A market on the first two home in either order.
Early pace
A dog's speed out of the traps and to the first bend; a big factor in short races.
Reduction factor
The published percentage by which matched bets on the remaining runners are reduced when a dog is withdrawn.

Greyhounds FAQ

Why is there so little money in the market?

Because greyhound markets fill in the last minute before the off. Minutes before, the back and lay columns may show single offers that are not representative. Watch one race from start to finish before you bet on any.

Can I bet in-running on greyhounds?

Some exchanges offer it for a few seconds, many do not. The race lasts about thirty seconds and the pictures most people see are behind the track, so in-running greyhound betting is not a sensible place for anyone to learn.

What happens if a dog is withdrawn?

Bets on it are void. Matched bets on the other dogs are reduced by the published reduction factor, and unmatched bets are usually cancelled, as in horse racing. Read the market rules.

Is real-money greyhound betting legal in India?

Online betting for money is gambling, which is restricted across India, and the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games. This site is information only and is not legal advice: check the law where you live.
